About the Collection
The Doug Lofstrom Collection dates from 1965 to 2019. The collection contains the work of Doug Lofstrom, outlining his professional career for decades as a musician, composer, and educator. This collection includes original compositions and arrangements, scripts, journals, correspondence, newsletters, academic work, catalogs, promotional materials, and recordings of his performances, in both physical and digital forms. Also present in the collection are a dozen compositions by Gene Pauls.
Biography
A composer and bassist whose scores reflect his involvement in theater, dance, film and symphonic music, Doug Lofstrom also formed The New Quartet, a chamber ensemble which performs original music and arrangements, Trillium, and, most recently, joined the group The Last Word. He was composer-in-residence for the Metropolis Symphony Orchestra and musical director of Chicago's Free Street Theatre before joining the faculty of Columbia College Chicago’s Music Department. His works have been performed by the St. Louis, Atlanta and Oregon Symphony Orchestras, and the Present Music and CUBE chamber ensembles. He has taught music at Columbia College since 1986, and was a full-time faculty member from 1999 - 2014, founding its New Music Ensemble in 2000 which he conducted from 2000-2016.

A symphonic piece for orchestra and jazz soloists composed in 1982 in four continuous movements; duration is 25 minutes. Accompanying audio recording is from page 65 of the score until the end of the piece. Score is 85 pages and recording is 6:04 minutes.

Music For Strings I, II, III
Doug Lofstrom
A symphonic piece for string orchestra. the first and second movements were composed in 1977 and the third movement and refashioning of the piece was completed in 1981. The accompanying audio recording is performed by the Russian String Orchestra in 2021, conducted by Misha Rachlevsky, Score is 27 pages and recording is 13:20 minutes.
