Poster Plus, a retail store selling original vintage posters, then located at 2906 N. Broadway, Chicago, Illinois, featured an exhibition entitled Student Strike Posters with protest posters created by students of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris during the French uprising in May 1968 paired with American college student strike posters created in May 1970 in reaction to United States actions at Kent State and in Cambodia and Vietnam. Twenty-six American silk screened works were featured in the exhibition, including many on this page created by Columbia College Chicago students who signed their work as the "Columbia Collective".
The exhibition ran the month of August 1970. The strike posters on display “illustrate a basic strength of idea or communicative force with limited use of color and imagery” as the press release reports, and, “the compositions are expressions of a moment in history and are not intended to exercise in visual aesthetic," with their impact "intended to be immediate."
"Columbia Collective" exhibit prints were sold by Poster Plus to generate money for paper and ink supplies for the student artists to continue creating protest posters.
