The Interactive Arts & Media (IAM) department was created in 2005 from the merger of the Academic Computing department and the Interactive Multimedia department, with Niki Nolin serving as the Academic Computing chair and Wade Roberts as the Interactive Multimedia chair before the merger.
Academic Computing was established in 1985, with Donald R. Carter as its coordinator and it became a department in 1987, with Carter as its Director. In 1992 Academic Computing offered its first classes and majors with Geof Goldbogen as its chair and a new, larger team.
The Interactive Multimedia Department began in 1997 as a part of the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program. It featured courses from Academic Computing, Film and Video, Radio/Sound, and the Interactive Multimedia Departments. Its co-directors were Daniel Dinello and Douglas Jones.
Annette Barbier served as the Interactive Arts & Media chair from the department’s inception in 2005 to 2012. Joseph Cancellaro became the department chair in 2011.
In the Fall 2017 semester, the Animation Program was moved from Cinema Art and Science to the Interactive Arts & Media department, currently offering ten different majors with eight concentrations and seven different minors. The coursework covers the fields of game art, design, sound and programming, interactive media design, digital market strategies, and animation.
The publication Profile offers news of student and alumni work, gallery exhibitions, and other departmental news, with a run from 2007 to 2012 in print.
