Abstract

Johann (Yo) Wood is a performance artist-scholar, vocalist, and painter. As both an MA and MFA candidate in theatre and devised performance, Johann’s interests are at the intersection of blackness, queer theory, mix & (re)remixing, and jazz aesthetics through embodied, auto-ethnographic research. He speaks about the process of creating the work, Queer Makishi -a short devised film, his performance thesis produced for his MFA in European Devised Performance Practice at Columbia College Chicago.

Comments

Performance artist/vocalist/painter Johann (Yo) Wood speaks about the process of creating his work, Queer Makishi-a short devised film, and his approach to his art in this Black Sun Devising Project Research Presentation. The film is 21:09 long and is divided into three sections:

  • Introduction to the Black Sun and Intermodal Shifting
  • The Manifesto (begins at 7:35)
  • The Movement Score (begins at 18:09)

Discussed are people who influenced his work, the practice of embodied performance, the role of the artist, and his Jazz Performance Matrix model.
